About Us
M.A.C.A.D.E.M.Y. is a prestigious Independent Teaching School located in Crown Heights - serving students ranging from nursery to the eighth grade. Started with the idea that one cannot build effectively without touching the younger generations, the institution offers a comprehensive learning environment in its quest to bring about a greater degree of intellectual and social competence in students, preparing them to effectively deal with their environment. M.A.C.A.D.E.M.Y. offers children the opportunity to develop their academic proficiency at a very young age, giving them the solid start to make them better equipped to focus on their purpose.
Housed on a residential block in a landmark building at 1313 Union Street in Brooklyn, N.Y., the school affords a home-like environment and maintains a total commitment to parents, students and community. M.A.C.A.D.E.M.Y. boasts small classes which afford students individualized attention to optimizes the strength and unique experience of each student and every effort is made to directly involve the family which it considers to be the principal influence in the child’s development.

M.A.C.A.D.E.M.Y. students consistently demonstrate the institution’s effectiveness in their teaching process. Students have received awards from the New York State Senate and Assembly, the New York City Council, the United States Congress and the President of the United States.

History
Miriam Ann Carr
On March 6th, 1907, Miriam Ann Lewis was born in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica. In 1920, at the age of thirteen years, she journeyed to Kingston to continue her education.
Her profound love for God and extended love for her children and grandchildren played a very important part in her mothering of the “Central Kingston Community” in which she lived. Miriam Ann Carr, so fondly called “Grannie”, was an advocate for childrens’ rights, and a champion in the advancement of education in Central Kingston. Many children were given the opportunity to excel in both their education and civic responsibility under the extraordinary leadership of Grannie. Grannie understood her duty to be a voice for the children. She encouraged parents to make education the priority in their children’s social lives and God in their spiritual lives.
Grannie lived in a community that had been transformed from wealth to poverty. Over the years, many of its, affluent members relocated making room for people from the rural parts, of Jamaica to take up residency. In their new found home in Central Kingston, life was not very easy, but Grannie gave them hope. Grannie not only opened her heart to love and work for children. She was also known as a philanthropist to the educational and every day needs of her community. Her home is still referred to as “House of Mercy”, because from this residence the infinite presence of God’s love emanated throughout Central Kingston and beyond.
Grannie understood that the fear of God, education, and integrity were major components for a successful life and a sure ticket out of the death and poverty that riddled her beloved community.
Miriam Ann Carr died in 1984 at the age of 77. One decade later M.A.C.A.D.E.M.Y. (Miriam Ann Carr Academy for the Development and Education For Multicultural Youth) was founded by her granddaughter, Rt. Reverend Hamilton-Gonzales to honor her. Under her watchful eyes from heaven, Grannie continues to inspire and care for the children. In loving memory of her remarkable compassion, tolerance, generosity and strong commitment to education we celebrate the life of a giant warrior who has left a legacy for this age and the next.
Rt. Rev. Sylveta Hamilton-Gonzales
Principal and Founder of MACADEMY
On March 8th 1994, the Rt. Rev. Sylveta Hamilton- Gonzales saw in a vision, children attired in blue and white uniforms playing in her yard under the watchful eyes of an angel. A voice spoke to her saying “These are the leaders of tomorrow that I have chosen for your care, educate and prepare them for the future and the world”.
In the months that followed, parents began asking Bishop Gonzales if she had a school for their children to attend because the public schools had no room. Inspired by her vision and the requests from the community, the Rt. Rev. Sylveta Hamilton-Gonzales founded MACADEMY in 1994 with five students.
MACADEMY stands as an ancient historic monument of African Heritage in a Landmark building located at 1313 Union Street, Brooklyn NY. It provides the students with a comprehensive development curriculum centered in a self, community and world consciousness. MACADEMY seeks to meet the entire students’ needs, this includes the mind, body and spirit. In order to educate the mind, body, and spirit, MACADEMY further awakens in each student the power to ignite within his or her self, the genius, strength, passion and other resources that are extremely necessary to succeed in their generation. In addition to self attainment, students are inspired to become concerned citizens and voices for the less fortunate of our community and society.
MACADEMY provides a curriculum which excels the requirements of the present and demonstrates the students’ abilities and vigor to meet the challenges for expansion into the future. Today MACADEMY teaches tomorrow’s leaders to view the world, not as fragments of the whole but to see the whole in each fragment. In so doing, MACADEMY fulfills its motto “Education and Unity Build a Strong Community”. For this cause MACADEMY is committed to a thoroughly diverse faculty and student body.
“Academic Excellence” has emerged as a hallmark of MACADEMY, and this institution has demonstrated through the empowerment of its students with self-esteem, responsibility, and character that “academic excellence” alone could never be the true measure of a great education. MACADEMY has designed an educational experience that would meet the needs and development of the student as a “whole person”. This institution provides ELearning thereby, enhancing the students ability to meet the challenges of the technology world.
